Social Harm Student Essay Competition 2025

The Social Policy Association (SPA) Social Harm Policy Group invites submissions from undergraduate and taught master’s students worldwide for the Social Harm Student Essay Competition 2025.

Essay Topic: How does a social harm lens enable investigation into a pressing contemporary societal issue?

Submission Guidelines:

  • Essays must be a maximum of 2,000 words (excluding references).
  • Submissions should be in English and follow Harvard referencing style.
  • The use of AI-assisted writing tools is not permitted.
  • Entries should be submitted to Nasrul.Ismail@bristol.ac.uk, including:
    • Correspondence address
    • University name
    • Programme of study
    • A valid university email address for further communication.


Prizes
 – Two winners will be selected:

  • Undergraduate student winner – £100 cash prize (sponsored by the UK Social Policy Association) + £100 book vouchers (sponsored by Bristol University Press).
  • Postgraduate taught student winner – £100 cash prize (sponsored by the UK Social Policy Association) + £100 book vouchers (sponsored by Bristol University Press).


Winning essays will also be considered for publication in the Justice, Power and Resistance journal, offering an opportunity for academic recognition.

Criminology @ Bristol – Zemiology Conference, December 2023

We held our second Zemiology Conference at Wills Memorial Building, Bristol on 11th December 2023. Dr Jo Large, who pioneered this event since 2022, convened the conference. It offered an excellent programme with a range of panels featuring 19 speakers related to the themes of: immigration and detention; researching powerful people and corporations; drugs, women and violence; and using creative methods to research crime and harm. Additionally, seven of our BSc Criminology students presented their posters based on their current dissertation topics. (more…)
